Hello, I’m Tom Rennison, the owner and lead tree surgeon here at Treescape North. If you’re looking for professional tree services in Harrogate and the surrounding villages, I’d like to give you a real insight into what I do, how I work, and how I can help you look after your trees, hedges, and garden landscape with care, precision and proper attention to detail.

I’ve worked in this industry for many years now, and I’ve seen firsthand the difference that good arboricultural practice makes, not just in terms of aesthetics, but also safety, wildlife, and long-term tree health. I take pride in doing a job properly and offering honest advice along the way.

Working Across Harrogate and North Yorkshire

Although I’m based near Thirsk, I work regularly in and around Harrogate, covering places like Knaresborough, Ripley, Killinghall, Pannal, Spofforth and out towards Wetherby and Boroughbridge. Whether you’ve got a back garden in Starbeck that needs tidying up or a large rural property near Beckwithshaw with mature trees to manage, I’ll always give you a straight answer and do the job right the first time.

Tree Reduction and Tree Removal

Tree reduction is one of the most common requests I get. Sometimes, a tree has simply grown too big for its spot, blocking light, leaning towards a roof, or overhanging a neighbour’s fence. Other times, a tree’s structure starts to deteriorate, or it’s showing signs of disease or decay.

When I assess a tree for reduction or removal, I’ll take into account its species, health, structure, and position. My aim is always to preserve trees wherever possible, but if a removal is needed, I carry it out safely and responsibly, with minimal disruption. All timber and waste is cleared, and the area is left tidy.

Harrogate has quite a few areas with Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs), so I’ll always advise on permissions and liaise with the council if needed. You won’t be left dealing with red tape on your own, I’ll help manage the process from start to finish.

Stump Grinding

Once a tree’s been removed, it often leaves behind a stump. These can be more than just an eyesore, they get in the way of mowing, replanting, or landscaping, and in some cases they can lead to regrowth or attract pests.

I offer full stump grinding using a specialist machine that removes the stump below ground level. This leaves you with a flat, level area ready for turf, planting, or paving. It’s a clean, efficient service, and if you want to keep the chippings as mulch, I can leave them on site.

Hedge Trimming and Hedge Reductions

There’s real satisfaction in a well-shaped hedge. Whether it’s a formal boundary hedge or a row of conifers that’s getting a bit tall, I can trim, reduce, or reshape it to suit your space. Regular maintenance keeps hedges looking smart and also promotes thicker, healthier growth.

Over the years, I’ve worked on everything from beech and yew to privet, laurel, and leylandii. Some hedges just need a tidy-up; others require cutting right back and re-establishing a manageable height and width. Either way, I’ll talk you through the options and do the job with sharp kit, clean lines, and full waste clearance included.

Site Clearances

If you’re preparing for a garden redesign, new building work, or agricultural project, a full site clearance might be in order. I’ve carried out clearances on everything from overgrown plots to smallholdings, involving tree removal, scrub clearance, and stump grinding all in one go.

With the right equipment and a careful plan, I can get your site ready quickly, efficiently, and safely. I’m fully insured and take care to protect surrounding land, access tracks, and nearby structures as we work.

Fencing and Landscaping

Over time, I’ve expanded what I offer beyond tree work. Fencing is a natural extension, especially when people are reworking their gardens or want more privacy after trees have been taken out. I install closeboard, panel, post and rail, and stock fencing, all built to last with quality materials.

I also carry out small landscaping jobs, like re-turfing, border creation, gravel driveways, and garden reshaping. These services go hand in hand with tree work, and it means you can get your whole outdoor space sorted by one local, trustworthy contractor rather than juggling multiple trades.

LOLER Inspections and Kit Safety

If you’re in the tree industry yourself, you’ll know how important it is to keep your climbing and lifting equipment safe and compliant. I’m qualified to carry out LOLER inspections and happy to work with other contractors, checking kit and issuing certificates for insurance and HSE purposes.

This is a specialist service, but it’s one I’m proud to offer, safety is paramount in our line of work, and I know how much peace of mind a proper inspection brings.

Looking After Trees in Harrogate’s Changing Climate

In recent years, we’ve seen a real shift in weather patterns across Yorkshire, hotter summers, stronger winds, and wetter winters. Trees are feeling the strain, especially those planted decades ago without these extremes in mind.

Part of my role is helping clients make informed decisions about their trees in the context of changing conditions. That might mean bracing a split limb, improving a tree’s structure through careful reduction, or advising on planting more resilient species. Every tree is different, and every job is tailored to the site, the client, and the long-term wellbeing of the landscape.

Fully Insured and Environmentally Responsible

I carry full public liability insurance and work in line with all industry safety standards. I also take environmental responsibility seriously. Wood is recycled or logged for fuel, green waste is composted, and I never recommend unnecessary removals. Where a tree can be made safe and left to support wildlife, particularly in rural or wooded areas, that’s always my first suggestion.

A Few Words on Customer Care

Working with people is one of the best parts of this job. I believe in turning up when I say I will, communicating clearly, and treating every garden or site with respect. Most of my work comes through word-of-mouth, and I value that trust hugely.

Whether I’m carrying out a quick hedge cut or spending a week on a major site clearance, I give the same care and attention to detail. I don’t outsource the work,  I’m hands-on every day, and I’ll be the one you speak to from first visit to final tidy-up.
